Focus on Patient Well-Being
When I was a kid I used to be one of those kids that would just take things apart and like to put them back together, so I used my hands a lot and then got into playing music and saxophone and some more kinda ... Then I found out I was pretty good at biology, and I like helping people. That's probably one of the biggest things, and the crazy story about all that is when I was a kid, went to the children's dentist a lot, unfortunately, but he, even as a kid I'd always go in and say, ‘I'm going to be a dentist one day,’ even at seven, eight years old.
He shows up at my office like 10 years ago or so and he says, ‘This the Derek Tieken that grew up in Dickinson?’ They were like, ‘Yeah, this is the front desk.’ I was one of those few that knew what I wanted to do from a really young age. That's kinda how I got into dentistry. I did my undergrad in Waco at Baylor university. They had a very good predental program, that's kinda why I chose it. Really good biology, and so then four years there and then got into dental school at UT here in Houston in the medical center and was there for four years, and actually got to be the president of my class in the last year. I got to give the commencement address and got to meet the president of the ADA, which was really cool. That's kinda my background.
He stays up-to-date on the latest dental trends by taking courses at The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
