Do your gums feel sore and tender when you touch them? There are several reasons for your discomfort. By identifying the cause, you can treat the problem and feel more comfortable.
The most common reason for sore gum tissue is gum disease. Gum disease occurs when bacteria and acids wear away at the gums. In addition to pain when touching the gums, other signs of gum disease include bleeding, redness and swelling, although none of these symptoms may be noticeable during the earliest stages of the disease.
The main reason you develop gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing are needed to remove plaque from the teeth. Otherwise, gum disease results, and over time, you might experience gum recession, loose teeth, or even tooth loss.
If your gums hurt in one particular place, a canker sore may be to blame. Canker sores are usually easy to spot, as they show up as red or white splotches in the mouth. Canker sores aren't well understood, so it is not known exactly why they appear. Fortunately, they go away on their own within about a week, but until then, they may be uncomfortable. Pain medications can help with discomfort until they clear up.
In rare cases, gum pain may be the result of oral cancer. That's why we recommend that you inspect your oral tissues frequently to look for changes. Oral cancer can start on the gums, inner cheek or tongue, and it often looks like a sore that simply won't heal. You might not feel pain right away, but you should monitor it. If the sore doesn't heal on its own within a couple of weeks, be sure to come into our office for a checkup.
Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent gum issues, and regular dental cleanings and checkups are also important. Call us today to set up your next appointment.
