Is Flossing Something That Should Take a Specific Amount of Time?
Posted on 3/25/2020 by Dr. J. Derek Tieken
When you floss your teeth, you are removing the interdental plaque between the teeth – plaque that can lead to the formation of cavities and gum disease. Therefore, brushing and flossing are both important for better dental health.
The time it takes to floss your teeth will depend on the tightness of your teeth, or the spacing between the teeth. Normally, it should take no longer than 1 ½ minutes to 2 minutes to do a thorough job of flossing. Even if you take your time, you won't spend much time on the activity.
Should You Floss or Brush First?
Flossing should complement brushing. Therefore, it usually is best to floss before you brush rather than brushing first. Scientists have found that flossing first reduces more interdental plaque and increases the concentration of fluoride. We recommend that you floss at least once a day and brush in the morning and evening.
Again, when you floss your teeth, it should take about 1 ½ minutes. If you use string floss, wrap each end around each middle finger so you get a good grip. Work the string gently between the spaces of the teeth, bending each section into a “U” shape. Use the thumb and index finger to guide the string between the upper teeth. To clean your lower teeth, place the floss further down on your index fingers. Don't snap the string and, again, be gentle.
You can damage your gums if you force the floss, so focus on the word “gentle.” Also, if you are uncomfortable using string floss, try using a floss pick. A pick is a great aid to have if you need to floss your teeth after you eat out. Allow us to show you the best way to floss and brush. Your dental care is important to us.
