If you use toothpicks in place of floss, you should rethink what you are doing. We highly advise against the use of toothpicks, as they can cause dental problems. The following information will give you the reasons for practicing this type of habit.
Why Toothpicks Should Not Be Used for Dislodging Food
While some people use toothpicks to dislodge food particles between the teeth, they can get into trouble doing so. For example, a toothpick may break off, which can cause more harm than good. If a splinter becomes trapped inside the gums, you can experience some severe dental pain. Also, swallowing the splinter can lead to some physical complaints. Some people dislodge food by pointing the toothpick's tip directly between the teeth. Doing so, as noted, can cause the toothpick to break off and can cause some real problems.
How a Toothpick Can Cause a Heart Attack
If you have a gum boil and use a toothpick, or poke at a place that has pus, you should not keep using the toothpick. Constantly poking at the spot can lead to an infection or even trigger a stroke or heart attack. Instead, it is better to play it safe and use dental floss to get rid of any food debris or plaque. Don't even attempt to use a toothpick, as doing so can worsen things instead of making them better. We advise patients to clean between their teeth. However, interdental cleaning should involve flossing, and not using a toothpick. To make the most of your oral health, brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to keep food debris and plaque from accumulating between the teeth. We can help support a healthy dental regimen – one where you safely remove food and plaque and maintain a healthy smile.
