If you are pregnant, you already know how important it is to stay on top of your overall health and visit your doctor's office for regular checkups. But did you know that it is extra important to take care of your oral health while pregnant as well? Read on to learn why frequent dental checkups at our office are essential for pregnant women.
Gum Disease and Pregnancy
Hormone fluctuations that occur during pregnancy can trigger inflammation in your gums, leading to gingivitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease, and a staggering 60 to 75 percent of pregnant women experience this issue. Symptoms of gingivitis include red or swollen gums, gums that bleed when you brush or floss, heightened tooth sensitivity, and bad breath. If gingivitis goes untreated and progresses into advanced periodontitis, you are at risk of tooth loss as well as birth issues such as low birth weight and premature birth.
Luckily, gingivitis can be reversed before it gets worse. Brushing twice a day and flossing once per day are essential for reversing gingivitis. If you are pregnant, you should see us for cleanings more often than the usual twice a year schedule, as professional cleanings allow us to remove plaque and tartar buildup that contribute to gum disease and other issues.
Morning sickness is a common side effect of pregnancy for many women. Frequent vomiting means that your teeth are coming into contact with stomach acid that can erode enamel. You may be tempted to brush your teeth right after throwing up, but this can actually spread the harmful acid across your teeth. Instead, try rinsing your mouth with a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid in your mouth, and wait at least thirty minutes before you brush.
Eating a nutritious diet while pregnant is vital for your health and the health of your growing baby. Vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, vitamin C, calcium, and phosphorus are all beneficial to your oral health, while the sweet and starchy foods you may be craving can linger on your teeth and contribute to tooth decay.
