Smoking Leads to Long-Term Dental Damage

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dr. J. Derek Tieken
Smoking Leads to Long-Term Dental DamageSmoking affects your overall health and oral health. There is nothing about the habit that makes the practice worthwhile. To ensure better oral health and enhanced overall health, you should break bonds with your addiction to tobacco and nicotine.

Why Smoking Is Bad for the Gums and Teeth

When you drag on a cigarette, you reduce the oxygen content in the lungs and weaken your immune response. You also stain the teeth using tobacco and make it harder for the body to fight off periodontal disease. Once you have the disease, smoking makes it more difficult for your gums to heal. Therefore, you get embroiled in a vicious cycle - smoking causes gum disease, making it hard for us to treat the condition.

How Your Oral Health Is Impacted

When you smoke, you have twice the risk of getting gum disease than someone who does not smoke. Also, many smokers have dry mouth, which increases incidents of tooth damage and decay. Because your saliva flow is reduced, you cannot wash away food debris and plaque naturally. In turn, plaque stays on the teeth and turns into tartar, which leads to dental decay. Saliva also contains enzymes that remineralize the teeth to prevent cavities. You don't have this type of advantage if you habitually smoke.

Preventing Decay and Gum Disease

One of the more important things you can do to preserve your smile is to quit smoking. By quitting smoking, it will also be easier to follow a regular dental routine. This routine includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing once daily. It will also be easier to see us for regular cleanings and exams. Treating dental problems can be averted by regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups. By quitting smoking, you can trigger a healthy chain reaction.

If you already smoke, make quitting a priority. Doing so will make it easier to treat your teeth and gums for gum disease or cavities. If smoking is an underlying cause for dental problems, quitting the habit will be well worth your while. Would you like to schedule a dental appointment today? If so, give us a call or contact us online.
