Halitosis

A woman with bad breath holding a hand on her mouth at Tieken Smiles DentistryHave you started to notice people shrinking away from you when you lean in to talk to them? If people are subtly starting to duck away from you, they may be trying to tell you something and are simply just too polite to speak up. There may be a good chance that you are suffering from a fairly common condition known as halitosis. No, do not worry - halitosis is not some new and terrifying disease. Halitosis just means that you have bad breath, and it can be caused by a wide variety of things.

If you suspect that your breath is not as fresh as it could be, we here at Tieken Smiles Dentistry have a few suggestions to help you feel less embarrassed about the odor coming from your mouth.

What Causes Halitosis and How to Take Care of It

Halitosis is quite common. Nearly one in four people suffer from some degree of chronic bad breath, but many people are puzzled as to not only how they managed to get bad breath, but also how they can treat it once and for all. The tricky part about halitosis is that it is often considered rude to point it out to someone, which makes diagnosing it all the more difficult.

Here is a quick test that you can try to determine if you have halitosis. When nobody is looking (and this is the important part!), lick the inside of your wrist. Let it dry down for a few seconds, then discreetly sniff the area you just licked. How does it smell? If you do not like the scent of your new perfume, then there is a good chance that you, also, have halitosis.

While having halitosis can be quite embarrassing, it is not just a social or cosmetic concern. Bad breath can be caused by some things, many of which we can treat and fix here in our office. Diet is one of the primary causes of halitosis. If you recently ate something pungent, such as garlic or onion, that could linger on your breath.

However, problems like tooth decay and infection in your mouth can also lead to halitosis. The presence of a sinus infection can also lead to bad breath, which would need treatment to remedy it. Having a dry mouth may also negatively impact your breath, leading to halitosis. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, these also could make your breath smell bad. Certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease and gastric reflux, can cause bad breath.

Treating bad breath starts at home, but we can also help. Make sure you implement a good oral hygiene regimen by making sure you brush your teeth for two minutes, twice per day. You also need to make sure you floss, as trapped particles of food and bacteria can cause your bad breath, too. Antibacterial mouthwash may also be beneficial, but please remember that mouthwash is no substitute for taking good care of your teeth!
