Dental Technology

Dr. J. Derek Tieken working on x-ray of a patient at Tieken Smiles DentistryModern dentistry has certainly come a long way since it was first introduced thousands of years ago. Ancient Sumerians once believed that tooth decay and cavities were caused by mysterious “tooth worms” and could not figure out that their diet and lifestyle were to blame.

The first known dentist to humankind came around in Egypt around 2600 BC, and the Chinese were producing amalgam fillings 1300 years ago. All of these eras far predate today’s time, but one thing they have in common is that they were curious about our teeth and how to fix them, and thus created the technology to help improve their smiles.

Today, we here Tieken Smiles Dentistry are proud to offer the latest advancements in dental technology to our patients.

What Dental Technology Do We Use in Our Office?

It is so easy to look back on our forebearers and regard their dental technology with a little chuckle at what they thought was cutting-edge technology, but the fact is, we would not be where we are today without their work. Sure, gold fillings may seem like old news today, but in the 1800s, early dentists were excited to discover that they could fill cavities with gold. Now, we have newer and better technology, but that does not mean we will get complacent. One day, someone may look back on us and smile at our excitement at our brand-new technological breakthroughs.

For instance, when the X-ray was invented in 1895, nobody back then could have envisioned how amazing this discovery would be for modern dentistry. We have since advanced in leaps and bounds, progressing to digital radiography to improve our care to our patients. We can now instantly look inside your mouth and assess your oral health. Even better, with our Cone Beam 3D imaging device, we can take a 360-degree panoramic of all of your oral surfaces, including nerves, bone, and blood vessels.

A manual scraper used to be the gold standard for cleaning teeth, allowing us to remove the hardened calculus and buildup from your dental enamel. While it was effective, it was also labor intensive and could be improved. Now we use an ultrasonic scaler in our office, giving us a vast improvement on how quickly and thoroughly we can clean your teeth. While the manual scaler is still a vital piece of equipment, you can see and feel the many benefits of upgrading to an ultrasonic scaler for cleaning at our office.
Even our handpieces (our dental drill) are improving in technology. In the past, we had to use a drill to access areas of tooth decay and prepare them for treatment with a filling or a crown. Now we can blast away tooth decay with our air abrasion device – which works similarly to a little sand blaster - clearing it out with fine particulates of silica. The air abrasion device is much gentler in many ways and can help us preserve more tooth when compared to a handpiece.
