Problems with your smile can make an appearance at an early age, and if they remain uncorrected, they can cause complications later on in life. While many people think dental braces only correct the appearance of a crooked or gapped smile, they are very important orthodontic devices.
In addition to making your teeth even and straight, they can also help correct a wide variety of dental issues such as overcrowding, jaw alignment, and even a gummy smile can be improved with them. While many people think that traditional braces are reserved just for younger patients, the fact is, more and more adults are also choosing to have this procedure done to improve their teeth.
We here Tieken Smiles Dentistry have seen time and again the fantastic results that dental braces can offer and are happy to continue to provide them to our valued patients!
Who is a Good Candidate for Traditional Braces?
Teeth that are crooked, overcrowded, and have unsightly gaps and spaces between them can not only start to take a toll on your self-esteem, they can also negatively affect your quality of life. The reality is that these issues with your teeth can make it difficult to not only feel good about yourself, but it can also make it harder to bite and chew and can even lead to speech impediments. Correcting problems with your jaw and bite (known as malocclusion) can lead to a happier, healthier smile.
Traditional dental braces consist of two main components that work together to adjust your teeth. They include a metal bracket that is attached to the surface of your tooth directly with a specific type of dental adhesive, and they are also comprised of metal wires that run from bracket to bracket.
When we tighten and adjust these wires, that helps coax your teeth into the correct position. They are a fantastic option for patients who may not be a good candidate for other types of orthodontic treatments due to more severe malocclusion. Traditional dental braces can help improve bite issues that arise from an overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, and a jutting jaw.
We will want to make sure you are in good oral health before we start your treatment with traditional braces. If you have any active infection or tooth decay, we will treat it first before we proceed with braces. While it is important to start patients early on braces to help them grow into a healthy and even smile, we do want first to make sure that they do have all of their permanent teeth before we begin.
Taking care of your braces does require extra attention to your diet and your oral hygiene. Certain foods should be avoided when using dental braces, as they can be damaging to your braces or get stuck in them. You will want to spend extra time brushing and flossing to prevent unwanted tooth decay during your treatment. From start to finish, treatment can take up to three years or more, depending on the severity of your dental concerns.
