A beautiful smile is a healthy-looking smile, and it starts with clean and white teeth. While many of our patients are careful to brush and floss at home, superficial surface stains can still start to develop and build up on their teeth. Various factors like diet and lifestyle can cause these stains to build up faster than usual.
That is why we here at Tieken Smiles Dentistry recommend that you schedule routine dental appointments in our office for a thorough cleaning with our ultrasonic scaler. Not only will it keep your smile looking attractive and bright, but it can also help keep them healthy and free from decay and infection.
What is an Ultrasonic Scaler and What Does It Do?
Many of you understand what happens at a dental checkup with cleaning at our office. We will typically start by asking how you are doing and if you have any chief complaints about your teeth or your smile. Once we are done with our initial assessment of your mouth, that is when your dental cleaning begins.
In the past, we would often reach for a manual scaler, but with the introduction of new technology, we are now pleased to clean your teeth with an ultrasonic scaler. These are highly effective at removing stains from the surface of your teeth, restoring your smile to its attractive glory. While this may seem like brand new technology, ultrasonic scalers have been around for decades, delivering unmatched results to our patients for years.
Ultrasonic scalers work by vibrating extremely fast, usually between 25,000 to 45,000 pulses per second. I know that may seem hard to imagine, but they move faster than the speed of sound. (Of course, one might think that they are silent, but they are not. If the sound of our ultrasonic scaler bothers you, please speak up!
We are happy to work with you to muffle the sound of our work to help you feel more comfortable during your dental appointment.) Because the tip of our ultrasonic scaler moves so quickly, it can efficiently and thoroughly remove all debris and buildup from your teeth. Hardened calculus is no match for it, and stains from tobacco and coffee do not stand a chance!
Our ultrasonic scaler shoots out a small jet of water during the scaling process. Not only does this jet of water, also known as lavage, help rinse off any buildup that we have successfully removed, it also helps keep the tip of our scaler nice and cool while we work on you.
Because it vibrates so quickly, without lavage, it could get quite hot during your scaling. Lavage also has another fantastic benefit: it does something called cavitation, which means that the bubbling effects of lavage helps to kill the bacteria on your teeth and makes it harder for them to grow back.

Ultrasonic scalers are great for most of our patients. However, if you do use a cardiac pacemaker or you have special concerns such as sensitive teeth or restorations, please let us know so that we may better accommodate you.
